03 / Counting conventions

Lines. Dots.
An open rhythm.

These conventions apply to counting marks, not to every form in the archive.

Original handwritten counting marks: lines, dots and arcs

Groups of vertical lines, separated by a single dot. From the simplest form, a rhythm can extend without end.

01

One dot between groups

No two dots touch. Lines never stand alone without a dot.

02

A dot can begin the sequence

A dot may begin the sequence, or the first group of lines may lead.

03

An arc, or none

An arc may appear above or below the marks, or be absent altogether.

11.11 / The artist’s signature

belongs to the artist.

The independent ||·|| without an arc is Kalman Pool’s signature, 11.11. It is shown here as a record and is always excluded from generation.
